Sickle Cell Genetic Counseling & Early Detection Program

We provide genetic counseling and early detection services to empower individuals with the knowledge to prevent and manage sickle cell disease effectively.

What we hope to achieve

Overview

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that affects millions globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In Cameroon, the burden is significant, with many individuals unaware of their carrier status until complications arise. The BraveLife Foundation’s Genetic Counseling & Early Detection Program is a proactive initiative aimed at reducing the incidence of sickle cell disease through education, early diagnosis, and informed reproductive choices.

This program equips individuals, couples, and families with the necessary tools to understand their genetic risks and manage the condition effectively if diagnosed. By promoting early intervention and genetic awareness, we are building a healthier future—one family at a time.

Why Genetic Counseling Matters

Many people who carry the sickle cell trait (AS) are asymptomatic and may not know their status until they have a child with SCD. This lack of awareness leads to emotional, financial, and physical strain for families. Our genetic counseling services address this gap by:

  • Educating individuals on the inheritance patterns and implications of sickle cell.

  • Providing confidential screening to determine carrier or disease status.

  • Guiding couples through family planning decisions with expert support.

  • Offering emotional and psychosocial support to affected families.

Through one-on-one and group counseling sessions, we create a safe space where participants can ask questions, receive clarity, and make empowered decisions about their health and their families’ future.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Early diagnosis is a critical step in managing sickle cell disease. Our early detection efforts focus on screening:

  • Newborns for immediate intervention.

  • School children to identify undiagnosed cases.

  • Adolescents and young adults before marriage or starting a family.

We collaborate with health centers, maternity wards, schools, and community groups to conduct targeted outreach and provide free or subsidized testing where needed. For those diagnosed with the disease, we offer a pathway to care, including referrals to clinics, health education, and connection to peer support groups.

Program Activities

  1. Community Awareness Campaigns
We organize sensitization events, educational seminars, and radio/TV programs to raise public understanding of genetic inheritance and the importance of early detection.

  2. Free or Low-Cost Screening Drives
Our mobile outreach teams partner with local clinics and community leaders to bring testing closer to underserved populations.

  3. Pre-marital & Family Counseling Sessions
We offer personalized counseling for couples preparing for marriage, expecting parents, and families with a history of SCD.

  4. Training for Health Workers
We empower nurses, midwives, and community health workers with the knowledge and tools to offer basic genetic counseling and testing.

Impact So Far

Since launching this program, BraveLife Foundation has:

  • Conducted over 5,000 screenings across multiple regions.

  • Provided counseling to more than 2,000 individuals and couples.

  • Identified over 600 carriers and guided them through preventive decisions.

  • Referred dozens of diagnosed children and adults to appropriate care centers.

These numbers represent not just statistics, but lives changed through access to knowledge and support.

Our Vision

We envision a Cameroon where every individual knows their sickle cell status, every couple makes informed reproductive choices, and every child born with the disease has access to timely care and support. Through strategic partnerships with health ministries, hospitals, and community organizations, we are expanding our reach and deepening our impact.
